Gen. David Petraeus, currently the commanding general of Multi-National Force — Iraq, was recommended by U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates on April 23 to be the next head of U.S. Central Command, which oversees U.S. military operations from Egypt to the Chinese border.
The nomination has strong implications for U.S. operations in Afghanistan.
