The Nabucco pipeline, intended to give Europe an alternative to Russian natural gas, has been in the planning stage for years. The proposed pipeline would ultimately transport 25-30 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas annually over 2,050 miles — from Turkey to Austria via Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary. While Europe has been keen on finding alternatives to Russian energy supplies, Nabucco has not materialized for lack of two key ingredients: natural gas and funding.
