The Syrian government has officially told the Hamas leadership in Damascus to choose between quietism and relocating to another country, a reliable source in the Palestinian faction Fatah said Dec. 6. The message allegedly was relayed by Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem via a telephone conversation with exiled Hamas politburo chief Walid Meshaal and Iranian Ambassador to Syria Mohammad Hassan Akhtari.
First and foremost, Stratfor must emphasize that this information has not been verified. Fatah, of course, has every reason to give the impression that its rival, Hamas, is getting cornered by the Syrians. That said, the Syrians would have justification for making such a move.
