The Korean Peninsula was artificially divided by the Cold War — a divide sustained by the fiscal and military support of outside global powers. The demilitarized zone along the 38th parallel is an arbitrary boundary, not one described by any real geographic features. Given its terrain and location, the peninsula as a whole is a far more coherent geographic entity than either of its parts. During the Korean War, both sides by turns moved at frightening speed up and down virtually the entire length of the peninsula, halted only near Pusan or the Chinese border.
