South Korean President Lee Myung Bak is due to meet with his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao in Beijing on May 27. Lee has been in office for almost three months and has already paid his respects in person to both the United States (securing the symbolic first visit by any South Korean president to Camp David) and Japan. China is next on his list of key players to visit.
At the top of the agenda will be economics and regional security — specifically the development of a Northeast Asian peace and security mechanism. This discussion is being driven by China as a way to keep the six-party security dialogue going after the North Korean nuclear issue fades away, to address other Northeast Asian and East Asian security concerns and to manage the role of the United States in Asia and the role of Asia in the world.
