Russian media have been swirling with news, plans and negotiations concerning the possibility of Moscow deploying bombers to Cuba. Though the myriad statements all seem to contradict each other and confuse the situation, in short, this is a typical Soviet-style move to spin Western intelligence in circles but nonetheless keep everyone — particularly the United States — nervous.
The first story initially looked false or even fantastic since it came from the former Soviet state media outlet — Izvestia — and quoted a retired military chief. However, the other media outlets jumped on board and began reproducing the story, and reactions from around the world followed until finally the Kremlin spoke out — though it contradicted itself in the process.
