After talks with Russian officials Nov. 28, Indian Energy Minister Murli Deora left Moscow with a big smile on his face, telling reporters that some big energy deals would be solidified come February, when Russian Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov visits India to inaugurate the “Year of Russia.”
In actuality, Deora was covering up what has become a very bumpy road in Indo-Russian relations. The drama revolves around the fate of the U.S.-Indian civilian nuclear accord. Though the deal itself is stalled, the very idea of the pact symbolizes a strategic realignment of Indian interests toward the United States — something Moscow is not too pleased with and is trying to sabotage by riling up Indian opposition to the nuclear agreement.
