While Hungarian communities across Eastern Europe have been celebrating Kosovo’s independence, the possibility that some of those communities — especially in Romania — might want their own independence has begun to raise concerns that a transnational Hungarian movement could reach into Slovakia, Serbia and Romania. However, Stratfor sources in Romania say the country’s Hungarian community is not as united as the media have portrayed.
According to widespread reports from Romania, the Hungarian community located in the region of Transylvania — led by the Democratic Union of the Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) — is pushing for independence and sees Kosovo as its example. But it is actually just the Szekler country pushing the move.
