Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf is resigning his position, he said Aug. 18 at the end of a long address to the nation. Musharraf said he would shortly be sending his formal letter of resignation to the speaker of the National Assembly.

After the formal acceptance of his resignation, the chairman of the Senate is expected to take over as interim president. It will be a few days before the ruling Pakistan People’s Party and its coalition allies will agree on a new president, who will then be elected by the national and provincial legislatures.

Musharraf’s resignation ends a turbulent chapter in Pakistani political history, but it does not put to rest the issues that are currently pushing Pakistan into crisis. Whoever takes over the presidency will face many of the same pressures that made Musharraf’s last years in office unenviable ones.
