Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, a key leader of the Pakistani Muslim League (PML) — which supports Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf — said Feb. 8 that in the Feb. 18 elections his party expects to win 115 seats from Punjab, the country’s largest province. Punjab has been the PML’s mainstay; Elahi was elected chief minister of the province in the controversial elections of 2002 and remained so until the end of his five-year term in November 2007. The PML has an advantage in the polls in that it dominates the caretaker government and the local governments.
