Algeria’s official APS news agency reported July 21 that Algiers had brokered a cease-fire between the Malian government and the ethnic Tuareg rebel group Democratic Alliance for Change (ADC). The deal between Bamako and the ADC will likely be short-lived as Bamako looks to expand its reach beyond its traditional southern base to promote new gold mining in the country, while the Tuareg continue seeking greater autonomy from Bamako and cash from resources in their territory.
