The Macedonian parliament is meeting April 10 to discuss its dissolution amid a political crisis that has paralyzed the government and led to calls for early elections. The political chaos is at a time when Stratfor sources have indicated that Macedonian President Branko Crvenkovski might strike a deal on the hotly debated name dispute with Greece, thus ending Athens’ veto of Macedonia’s membership in Western institutions. But there is concern that if the deal is struck at the same time elections are called, some factions within Macedonia could radicalize.
Macedonia’s ruling coalition comprises the Democratic Party of Albanians (DPA) and the center-right Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization-Democratic Party for Macedonian National Unity (VMRO-DPMNE). On March 12, DPA left the coalition — something it has done many times, and on most occasions it has returned. DPA is demanding more rights for ethnic Albanians in Macedonia and the country’s immediate recognition of neighboring Kosovo’s independence from Serbia.
