A Lebanese military source confirmed to Stratfor on July 15 that Hezbollah has taken up positions in Lebanon’s Sannine Mountain area. Details are scarce, but it appears that Hezbollah — with Iranian assistance — has emplaced some manner of radar or early-warning equipment on the strategic 7,800-foot mountain range.
Stratfor first learned of Hezbollah’s plans to take control of the mountain when a Hezbollah patrol intercepted a group of four Lebanese Christian young men on Mount Sannine on June 22. Hezbollah denied that its members were involved in the incident, but locals in the area say that Hezbollah is well positioned in the area. That incident was a strong indicator that Hezbollah’s plans to take control of the strategic mountain were already in motion.
Rather than being a hostile preparatory act for war, Hezbollah’s move to take control of Mount Sannine is a move made out of desperation. With Syria and Israel moving toward a peace deal, the walls are closing in on the militant movement, and it needs the mountain to secure its core territory against a possible attack.
