Efforts to mediate a political crisis between the Kenyan government and the opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party continued Jan. 10, but no deal was reached. A power-sharing agreement is likely, but not before both sides have wrangled to get the best concessions from each other.
ODM spokesman Salim Lone said Jan. 10 that the opposition party is considering participation in a coalition government, adding that the issues dividing the government and the ODM have narrowed following mediated negotiations. Lone’s statement came a day after African Union (AU) chief and Ghanaian President John Kufuor performed shuttle mediation in the Kenyan capital between Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
