Reports surfaced June 2 that the Iranian government ordered the temporary closure of the semi-official Fars News Agency (FNA), because it reported that the head of Iran’s Central Bank, Tahmasb Mazaheri, had been replaced by First Vice President Parviz Davoodi — a report which authorities denied. FNA published that denial as well. The Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA) on June 2 carried a statement from the Public Relations Office of the Ministry of Culture’s Information and Media Department saying that the Press Supervisory Board has decided to place a three-day ban on FNA. ISNA quoted the ministry as saying, “The Fars News Agency published a false and unrealistic report June 1 which in addition to suggesting division and disagreement among officials, caused anxiety and instability in the economic sector. This false report was spread among institutions, economic bodies and the public and affected a great number of people in a negative way.”
