By the skin of its teeth, India’s ruling Congress party survived a no-confidence vote in parliament July 22. After bribery allegations, walkouts and jailbreaks by criminal parliamentarians, the latest vote tally put Congress in the lead with 275 votes in favor and 256 against.
The no-confidence vote, which threatened to bring down the ruling coalition and trigger fresh elections, was called soon after India’s left-wing bloc made good on its threats to withdraw support for the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance coalition July 8 in protest of a pending U.S.-India civilian nuclear deal. The communist parties took with them 59 parliament seats, forcing Congress into a political horse-trading frenzy to buy enough political support from minority parties to stay in power.
