Fighters under Tutsi rebel leader Gen. Laurent Nkunda agreed to return to peace talks Jan. 11 in Goma, the capital of North Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). No peace agreement is likely for the mineral-rich but lawless territory, however.

Peace talks in Goma picked up Jan. 11 after Nkunda supporters received assurances from local U.N. peacekeepers that they will not be threatened with arrest. The Goma talks essentially are the latest in the on-again, off-again negotiations that have taken place since 2004 between the DRC government and the country’s Tutsi rebel forces.
