Russian strategic aviation bomber crews may have arrived in Cuba on July 24, according to unconfirmed reports by the Russian daily Izvestia, which cited unidentified Russian Defense officials. A different Russian news agency, Interfax, quickly carried denials that bombers had actually landed on the island. Although actual repositioning of bombers is unlikely, the rumors have returned Cuba (at least briefly) to its former position at the center of the storm that is U.S.-Russian relations. If nothing else, the rumors are an indication of Russia’s increasing assertiveness in the region.
