Taiwan’s Vice President-elect Vincent Siew confirmed April 14 that the island’s new government will restart official dialogue with mainland China — possibly thawing talks that have been frozen since 1999 — as soon as Taiwan’s new government takes power in May. The inauguration of Taiwan’s President-elect Ma Ying-jeou is set for May 20.
Siew made his comments after flying home victoriously after three days of red-carpet treatment in China, during which he met briefly with China’s President Hu Jintao. The meeting occurred during the eighth annual Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference, an economic forum held April 12-13 on the Chinese island of Boao. News of possible formal Chinese-Taiwanese talks might signal the start of improved relations across the Taiwan Strait. However, at least for now, such talk will remain just that — talk — with little real geopolitical action.
