A Chadian rebel group intent on toppling President Idriss Deby has advanced toward the country’s capital, N’Djamena, media reported Jan. 31, citing the Chadian government. War in the capital not only threatens Deby’s grip on power, it threatens the country’s southern oil fields; it also means that Sudan’s Darfur conflict is far from over.
Chadian rebel group Union of Forces for Democracy and Development (UFDD) reportedly advanced to the town of Ati, some 250 miles east of N’Djamena. The UFDD, based in the porous Chadian-Sudanese border region, has been fighting to overthrow the Deby government, which it accuses of human rights violations and corruption. Deby, in turn, accuses the Sudanese government of supporting the UFDD.
