Chadian President Idriss Deby called Feb. 7 for EU peacekeepers to deploy to Chad. Deby will likely use the 3,700 EU peacekeepers as protective cover while his own forces pursue Chadian rebels and he aids rebels in Darfur.
The EU force (EUFOR) was set to begin deployment at the end of January to provide a security force for humanitarian relief operations in eastern Chad. The 3,700-strong force, including 2,100 French troops, was to deploy to several positions in the eastern part of the country. An estimated half-million refugees from Sudan’s Darfur region and internally displaced Chadians are camped in eastern Chad.
