The Olympic Games began Aug. 8, and the audience at the opening ceremony was a veritable who’s who of the international scene. But more notable than the numerous heads of state and luminaries who attended the ceremony is the short list of prominent leaders who did not.
Mexican President Jose Felipe Calderon did not attend the ceremony because he is fully engaged in a war with the drug cartels plaguing his country. Victory, or even a reduction in high levels of violence that are beginning to resemble those seen earlier in the Iraq war, is nowhere in sight. Calderon and his administration are completely preoccupied with the narcotics war, which has already taken the lives of several high-ranking officials and numerous civilians. Calderon might not have the chance to take a real siesta for years.
