Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith spoke in support of China’s opposition to Taiwan’s bid for independence as Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd entertained the idea of selling China a sizable chunk of one of its national mining champions Feb. 5, during Australia’s first strategic dialogue with China. Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi’s visit for the talks is the first high-level Chinese government visit to Australia since the new Labor government came to power in Canberra.

Canberra is currently in midst of plans to cast itself as the middle power, or geopolitical broker, between Washington and Beijing — but has no plans to change its fundamental geopolitical stance while doing so.
