A car bombing in the eastern Larba suburb of Algeria's capital, Algiers, on Aug. 14 critically injured Mustapha Kertali, a former Islamist leader who renounced violence in 1999. During the Islamist insurgency that raged in the country in the 1990s, Kertali was affiliated with several jihadist groups, including the now-defunct Islamic Salvation Army and the Armed Islamic Group (GIA). In recent years, Kertali supported President Abdel Aziz Bouteflika's efforts to end Islamist militancy in the country.
