The eurozone's gross domestic product will shrink by about 0.5 percent in 2009, its first contraction since 1993, Bloomberg reported Dec. 4, citing European Central Bank (ECB) President Jean-Claude Trichet. The ECB cut its benchmark rate to 2.5 percent Dec. 4, but Trichet said the bank should not get "trapped" in reducing rates too much. Inflation will slow to about 1.4 percent in 2009, down from 3.3 percent in 2008, he added. Trichet said inflation rates should keep in line with price stability "over the relevant policy horizon.”
